Healthcare Professional Frequently Asked Questions
How does Caphosol work?
Caphosol is a supersaturated calcium phosphate rinse with a high
concentration of electrolytes simulating the missing natural
saliva. It lubricates the tissues, makes them slide easily on
contact, minimizing friction, ulceration and corresponding pain and
discomfort associated with these conditions.
The mucous secretion remains functional creating a very sticky,
uncomfortable glue-like condition in the oral cavity, which further
exacerbates the pain and discomfort. The recommended rinsing and
moving the Caphosol around in the mouth loosens the mucous and
helps in the lubrication, providing relief and comfort.
Does Caphosol have side effects?
Reported side effects have been rare and
generally mild. Caphosol contains 71mg of sodium per 30mL dose;
patients restricted to a low sodium diet should consult their
physician before use.
How is Caphosol dosed?
During cancer treatment Caphosol is indicated four to ten times
per day if experiencing pain from mucositis. Write for one 120-dose
pack at one time which represents a four times per day usage. This
equates to a one-month supply, based on four rinses per day.
If you are using Caphosol for the treatment of permanent or
temporary dry mouth conditions, you may prescribe Caphosol from two
times per day or more.
Why is Caphosol supplied in two ampules?
The calcium phosphate content of Caphosol is in a chemically
supersaturated state. However, a supersaturated solution may
precipitate out minerals over time. Therefore Caphosol should be
prepared from two different ampules before use in order to maintain
a high degree of supersaturation.
